A New Crop of Models has the Established Worried.

I came across a somewhat recent article written about a new crop of models called “Instagirls.” Instagirls are models that have become famous through social media such as Instagram. Models like, Cara Delevingne, Kendall Jenner (although, she was famous before Instagram due to her family), Jourdan Dunn, Joan Smalls, and Karlie Kloss to name a few. These girls have such a high follower count on social media that it makes them easier to market and more profitable.

People like Cara, Kendall, Jourdan, Joan, and Karlie. They see them as girls that have fun and are beautiful, but most importantly they can possibly relate to them. Brands and companies see how these group of girls, or young women, relate to their followers, and quickly give them beauty contracts or ad campaigns. Thus, making them the supermodels of today. So, is there anything wrong with that? No.

Photographer, Steven Meisel, mentioned how the industry has changed so much and he is not a fan it. “It’s more [about] how many Likes you get on Instagram, which I do not do. I’m not into it.” Another icon in the industry, Naomi Campbell said that back when she was starting out models had to work for what they got. “We [’90s supermodels] had to earn our stripes and take our stepping stones to get to where we’ve gotten, and to accomplish what we have achieved.” Meisel and Campbell imply as though models today don’t have to work as hard as back when they were starting out. That in itself is debatable.

The new wave of models still have to work to reach a certain level of success. No one just follows them on Instagram. They have to earn followers. There are many pretty girls in the world, yet only a few instagirls. These “instagirls” have something that others do not have. Something that makes them interesting, makes them different, or just makes them cool. In the late 80s and early 90s when Campbell was beginning her career she didn’t have an instagram, but she had that something that made her stand out and people took notice. Being an instagirl can only help you so much, because at the end of the day you still need the right look and attitude for the job. You must have something that makes you stand out and get noticed. One cannot entirely say that the girls today have it better or worse. It is just different. The fashion industry is changing and we have to keep up.
