For Teen Vogue’s August Issue they’re introducing three new faces to their readers. Typical and no big deal, right? Wrong. The three models they have chosen to be the cover models of the August Issue are all models of color. Aya Jones, Imaan Hammam, and Lineisy Montero are all new faces who are on the rise in the modeling world. Jones and Montero have both walked for Prada during Milan Fashion Week, while Hammam has been featured in American Vogue and in the Givenchy Spring/Summer 2015 advertising campaign.
Using not one, but three Black models is a much needed improvement that the world of fashion needs. There have been many panel discussions and talks about the lack of diversity in fashion. Despite those conversations being had it felt like there was no real change or growth to show that models of all colors were being used.
However, now it can be said that this Teen Vogue August 2015 issue can be considered a step in the right direction. With Jones, Hammam, and Montero all on the cover hopefully that will cause more editors and casting directors to want to use more Black models. This cover is not simply a cover, but an image that shows Teen Vogue’s readers that Black is beautiful and diversity is always a good thing.
